The Long Beach Shakespeare Company (LBSC) - formerly Bard-in-the-Yard - was founded in July of 1989 by a group of actors who wanted to provide Shakespeare and other classics at no charge to the public. The company received its 501 ( c ) (3) status on May 22, 1990. For its first seven years, the company produced one or two free summer productions in various parks and venues of Long Beach. In 1997, LBSC became a full-time organization, performing a repertoire of European and American classics throughout southern California. The company continues to produce an annual free Shakespeare festival in the parks of Long Beach. In 2003, LBSC acquired a resident space in Bixby Knolls, The Black Box Theatre, which seats 40 and offers the audience an intimate theatrical experience and educational outreach to the community.
